25 House Democrats protest Meese nomination

February 13, 1984

Twenty-five House Democrats want the Senate Judiciary Committee to reject the nomination of White House counselor Edwin Meese III as attorney general, saying he is not a friend of those who seek justice.

''This position should be held by someone who understands the plight of the less privileged,'' the 25 said in a letter Friday. ''Clearly, Mr. Meese, who four weeks ago could not find hunger in America, is ill-suited to find justice for all in our country.''

Only senators vote on the nomination.
