Yes, there's hunger, study says, and it blames US cuts

A new study, contradicting the findings of a presidential commission, has found hunger in America and says it is the ''direct result'' of recent government cuts in welfare, food stamps, and school-lunch programs.

''We have found serious hunger in our land, and we have found it relatively easily,'' Dr. J. Larry Brown of Harvard University said. ''We saw hunger in every state, every town, and each rural area we looked. We went into no region without finding hunger.''

The 110-page report by the Harvard School of Public Health and the Citizens Commission on Hunger in New England called for an increase of 25 to 30 percent in the federal food-stamp program and expanded welfare and nutrition programs.
