Protestants say US hasty in reviewing Vatican envoy

Protestant church leaders say Sen. Charles H. Percy (R) of Illinois made an ''inordinate rush'' to act on the nomination of a US ambassador to the Vatican. In a letter to Senator Percy, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee , the leaders Monday called for ''full and fair consideration'' of William Wilson, nominated by President Reagan to be US ambassador to the Vatican.

Mr. Percy, with only a week's notice, scheduled a one-day hearing on Wilson's nomination for tomorrow.

In the letter to Percy, the churchmen noted that neither the House nor the Senate has held hearings on the controversial move. ''The democratic process has been circumvented,'' they said, urging Percy to ''compensate for the blatant disregard of public input.''
