US officials say missiles apparently in E. Germany

Defense officials said Thursday there are signs the Soviet Union has begun deploying SS-22 medium-range missiles in East Germany in retaliation for NATO's deployment of Pershing II and cruise missiles.

If so, it would be the first time this type of missile has been deployed outside the Soviet Union. The move would extend the reach of medium-range missiles as far west as Britain and south to Italy.
