Salvadorean businessmen criticize former US envoy

A group of Salvadorean businessmen has launched a publicity offensive against former US Ambassador Robert E. White, claiming he plays a key role in an ''odious'' effort by ''liberals'' to link prominent Salvadoreans with death squads.

The El Salvador Chamber of Commerce of Industry charges that Mr. White is violating human rights by spreading lies about the Salvadoreans. The group vigorously denied, in a full-page advertisement Wednesday in the newspaper El Diario de Hoy, that Roberto Hill, a wealthy landowner and businessman, is connected with death squad activity - an allegation White reportedly made.

Mr. White, now a professor at Simmons College in Boston, was dismissed as ambassador after criticized the Reagan administration's foreign policy toward Central America.
