Jackson call for a pullout in Europe warms students

The Rev. Jesse Jackson told cheering Georgetown University students Tuesday that as US president he would gradually withdraw American troops from Europe. The troop-withdrawal call by the civil rights leader, a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, was one of several antimilitaristic themes that won him warm ovations from the students.

Mr. Jackson said that the deployment of some 260,000 US troops in Western Europe was appropriate under early postwar conditions but that Europe, as well as Japan, had now ''come of age'' and should start ''paying its own way'' for defense. None of the other seven contenders in the Democratic race have gone so far on the troop issue.
