Police gird for Olympics with antiterrorist devices

Police preparing for the Olympic Games are stockpiling a cache of antiterrorist hardware, including silencer-equipped submachine guns, aerial and underwater surveillance devices, and a robot. Police will spend over half a million dollars on the equipment, which they will keep once the Games are over.

Among the acquisitions are a bomb-disposal robot; ''photo binoculars'' that take pictures with 35-mm film; underwater communication equipment; and an ''electronic detection apparatus'' that can spot impressions left by writing after the original copy is gone.

Police spokesman William Booth said such equipment had long been needed by the department.
