Jordanian King returns, to parliamentary cheers

King Hussein of Jordan, addressing parliament Monday, showed no visible signs of the ailment that forced his hospitalization last week, Monitor correspondent Ned Temko reports.

The King, who has ruled Jordan since the early 1950s, strode confidently to the podium and spoke in a strong and resonant voice during his half-hour address. He bowed acknowledgment to cheers of welcome from legislators clearly relieved at his return.

But official sources said privately that the King was under pressure from advisers to avoid unneccessary strain for at least a short while. Specifically, officials want him to delay a visit to India set for later this month.
