College to close down its fraternities, sororities

Concluding that its eight fraternities and two sororities were discriminatory and provided a social atmosphere not conducive to study, the Colby College board of trustees Saturday unanimously approved their closing at the end of this academic year, a Colby spokesman said.

The Colby board endorsed a proposal by a special trustee commission on campus life, which called for the regrouping of the fraternity houses and dormitories into four ''residential commons,'' beginning in the 1984-85 academic year, the spokesman said. Students will have a role in their governance.
