Turkey warned by Greece not to advance in Cyprus

Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou said Wednesday his country would react militarily to any attempt by the Turkish Army to advance its position in Cyprus.

The Greek leader said Cypriot President Spyros Kyprianou, who the same day submitted ideas on the Cyprus issue to UN Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar, enjoyed the full backing of Athens in his initiatives. The Turkish-Cypriot spokesman at the UN, Nail Atalay, immediately rejected the terms , which call for the withdrawal of last November's proclamation of an independent Turkish-Cypriot state.
