Minneapolis mayor vetoes ordinance on pornography

Minneapolis Mayor Donald Fraser vetoed a new city ordinance Thursday that would have allowed women to sue for damages on the grounds that certain kinds of pornography violate their civil rights.

Fraser said he accepted the premise that pornography degrades women, but said the law approved last week by the city council violated the right of free speech and could have made it impossible for legitimate bookstores, movie theaters and museums to operate legally.
