British foresee bigger role for UN forces in Lebanon

Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said Wednesday that Britain wants UN forces in Lebanon to take on an expanded role there, ready to fill any vacuum left by a future withdrawal of the multinational peacekeeping force.

''Remember how terrible it was before the international force went in,'' Mrs. Thatcher said in a television interview. ''If there was terrible slaughter again , we should all feel very, very guilty if we hadn't made alternative arrangements.''

Mrs. Thatcher also spoke on the Falkland Islands, saying their ''sovereignty is not negotiable,'' and she said Britain wanted normal relations with Argentina.
