Shamir meets with leaders of Israel's Arab minority

Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir held an unprecedented meeting Wednesday with 27 leaders of Israel's Arab minority, who complained to him of unequal treatment by the government and violence by extremist Jews.

Mr. Shamir's adviser on Arab affairs, Benyamin Goor Aryeh, said more such meetings would follow. Shamir assured the leaders that Israeli Arabs were an integral part of the population who must enjoy the same rights as Jews, and he ''promised to put his full weight behind finding quick solutions to the problems ,'' Mr. Goor Aryeh said.
