Racial harmony stressed by 2 new big-city mayors

In inaugural addresses, the new mayors of Boston and Philadelphia have called for better racial relations. Boston's Mayor Raymond Flynn, a former city councilor and state representative, promised to work toward "racial harmony" and to pay more attention to the ends of the city'sdiverse neighborhoods.

In Philadelphia, W. Wilson Goode, the son of North Carolina sharecroppers, said his inauguration Monday as the first black mayor ofthe nation's fourth-largest city was "another step in ... a journey once thought impossible."

Mr. Goode succeeds former Mayor William Green, who did not seek re-election.
