Soviet paper warns Turkey against US A-umbrella

The Soviet Army newspaper Red Star warned Turkey Tuesday against strengthening its military links with the United States and said Moscow would not accept US nuclear missiles on Turkish soil.

In an unusually sharp attack, the newspaper said the Ankara leadership was ignoring past agreements on bilateral relations with Moscow that pledged both sides to avoid the use or threat of force. Leading Turkish politicians were now calling for an American ''nuclear umbrella'' over their territory, it said, and trying to condition the public to the idea of deploying US medium-range weapons there.
