US ends arms embargo against Guatemala

The US has resumed sending military supplies to Guatemala, ending a six-year embargo for alleged widespread human rights violations. Col. Rodolfo Lobos Zamora, Army chief of staff, said Guatemala had taken delivery of $2 million in spare parts for helicopters, which he said are important in the country's fight against left-wing guerrillas.

Human rights groups sharply criticized the Reagan administration when it lifted the ban in January.
