Moscow missile 'give' reported for Far East
Moscow is ready to stop installing SS-20 medium-range nuclear missiles in the Soviet Far East provided Washington makes no attempt to reinforce its strategic forces in Asia, according to a Soviet news agency chief.
The mass-circulation Asahi Shimbun quoted Kalen Khachaturov, vice-president of the Novosti news agency, as saying the missile curb would be possible if the US and its allies made no major moves to increase their strategic forces in Asia.
He said Moscow was concerned about deployment of up to 48 US F-16 bombers at Misawa Air Base in northern Japan beginning in 1985.
