Britain's big papers split over dispute with union

Owners of Britain's nine national newspapers split over a continuing dispute with the printers' trade union. Five of the papers - the Sun, the Times, ther Daily Mirror, the Daily Express , and the Daily Star - failed to appear Monday after managements fired print workers who walked out Friday night, stopping Saturday and Sunday editions.

All the papers, including those back on the streets Monday - the Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph, Financial Times, and Guardian - said they would sue the National Graphical Association, Britain's most powerful print union, for damages caused by lost production.
