Bangladesh orders curfew after protest turns violent

Bangladesh's military authorities imposed a 14-hour curfew here after a massive antigovernment demonstration Monday in which at least two people were reported killed and more than 200 injured.

Troops were called in to help restore order after police failed to halt the scheduled demonstration by an estimated 25,000 people calling for an end to military rule and a return to parliamentary democracy.

The state radio said the curfew would be imposed indefinitely. It also said a ban on political activity, lifted two weeks ago after 19 months in force, was being reimposed.
