Jamaica's prime minister announces early elections

November 28, 1983

Jamaica will hold a general election Dec. 15, two years ahead of schedule, Prime Minister Edward Seaga said Saturday night. Jamaicans last voted in October 1980, when Seaga's Jamaica Labor Party ousted the People's National Party (PNP) which had governed for eight years. Seaga said his government needed more than the two-year period remaining to implement its program for economic development.
