British police search for gold thieves in record heist

November 28, 1983

Police Sunday hunted for an armed gang which carted away three metric tons of pure gold from a security warehouse in Britain's - and probably the world's - biggest holdup.

Bullion and two boxes of diamonds worth about $37.5 million were stolen Saturday after six hooded men with pistols forced entry into the warehouse near London's Heathrow Airport despite electronic security devices, closed circuit television, and floodlights.
