Commonwealth heads cite concern for small nations

November 28, 1983

Commonwealth leaders Sunday issued a plea for world peace and cited particular concern over the safety of small nations. The heads of government of the 48-member group of former British colonies issued the statement after a two-day break in this western Indian resort from their New Delhi summit.

The declaration did not mention the US-led invasion of Grenada which took up much of the leaders' informal talks. Commonwealth Secretary-General Shridath Ramphal said the issue would be covered in Tuesday's closing communique. Indications were the leaders would propose setting up a security force to replace US troops in Srenada.
