Senate passes measure to raise US debt limit

The Senate early Thursday passed a stalled bill raising the public debt limit which President Reagan said is needed for the federal government to continue borrowing to pay its bills.

The bill, raising the current debt ceiling from $1.389 trillion to $1.45 trillion, must be reconciled with a different House bill passed in June.

Legislation including a proposal for an additional $8.4 billion for the International Monetary Fund was still on the agenda although Congress was scheduled to adjourn today.
