Schools shut to prevent election protests in Peru

The Peruvian government Tuesday declared a week-long school vacation in the days preceding municipal elections Sunday to avert the possibility of student demonstrations. The government has warned Peruvians that the Maoist guerrilla group Shining Path, which has claimed responsibility for numerous terrorist attacks in Lima and provincial cities, will step up its attacks in coming days in a bid to disrupt the elections.
