Soviet magazine criticizes criminal courts in USSR

A leading Soviet magazine says defendants are not given a fair chance at Soviet trials and the court system should be reformed to eliminate a heavy bias in favor of the prosecution. In an unusually outspoken attack on Soviet legal practice, the political weekly Literaturnaya Gazeta Tuesday said courts were falling into disrepute because the accused were too seldom given a proper hearing or even granted adequate defense.
