Algerian President pays three-day visit to Paris

Algerian President Chadli Bendjedid, who fought against French troops as a guerrilla comander in the two countries' eight-year war, is on a three-day visit to Paris designed to symbolize their reconciliation.

French officials said they hoped President Chadli's visit, the first by an Algerian head of state since the country won independence in 1962, would foster a new relationship after two decades of difficulties. The emotional high point of the visit is expected today, when Mr. Chadli is to pay his respects at France's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
