Early results in Turkey favor Motherland Party

Turkey's conservative Motherland Party took an early lead Sunday in general elections for a civilian government to succeed the military regime, with computer predictions giving the party a solid majority in the 400-seat national assembly.

The surprise is the likely emergence of the Populist PArty as the second largest group, in front of the rightist Nationalist Democracy Party, for which President Kenan Evren had shown his support.
