Trudeau keeps his distance over Grenada invasion

Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, echoing the reservations of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, has sought to distance himself from President Reagan over the invasion of Grenada.

The Trudeau government also believes the invasion put at risk the lives of about 40 Canadians on the Caribbean island. Mr. Trudeau, who was not consulted in advance about the invasion, stopped short of outright condemnation, but said he was still not satisfied by Washington's explanations.

Delays in getting landing permission for a plane to fly into Grenada and airlift out about 30 Canadians stranded there prompted Canadian Ambassador Allan Gotlieb to deliver a protest note to the US State Department Wednesday.
