Mass transit

October 25, 1983

I watched them. They sat adjacent and somewhat together - a man and a woman, youthful if that matters. (They made no demands against the sounds of the subway) My eyes rubbed past them - past once more - and I saw others who did not see them. I tried tightening the grip of my vision to see what books they were reading. The subway stopped. The man and the woman folded their books stood up and, without warning, started talking to each other.
