3 former officials found guilty in lab fraud case

Three former officials of a company that conducted animal tests to check the safety of drugs and other products were found guilty Friday in a case involving allegedly falsified cancer studies. The three men were found guilty of mail fraud; two of the three were also convicted of making false statements to the government.

They were officials of Industrial Bio-Test Laboratories Inc., a testing laboratory in Northbrook, Ill., that was closed in 1976 after a federal investigation alleged that test data on a pesticide, a herbicide, and two drugs had been faked. Subsequent tests by other laboratories have proven the products safe.
