Pakistan tries to subdue Sind Province resistance

An opposition spokesman said Thursday that 22 people were killed and many more wounded when the Army used helicopter gunships to quell unrest in Pakistan's southern province of Sind.

The spokesman for the outlawed Pakistan National Party said the gunships were sent into action Wednesday against several Sind villages. He said several hundred people were arrested in one of the Army's biggest operations in the province since the opposition campaign against the military government was launched in mid-August.

The government admitted Wednesday that there was trouble in the region but said only one civilian, who was armed, was killed.
