Thatcher shuffles Cabinet in wake of resignation

Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher named one of her most loyal lieutenants, Employment Secretary Norman Tebbit, to take over the Trade and Industry Department following the resignation of Cecil Parkinson. Mr. Parkinson resigned after disclosures about an affair with his former secretary embarrassed the government.

Mr. Tebbit, an outspoken hard-liner, was hailed by conservatives as Mrs. Thatcher's likeliest successor. Transport Secretary Tom King took over Tebbit's old job and Nicholas Ridley, financial secretary to the Treasury, replaced Mr. King.
