Polish Communists accuse church of subversion

The Central Committee of Poland's Communist Party Saturday ended a two-day meeting at which officials accused the Roman Catholic Church of undermining the state's authority and taking control of the youth. The Rev. Henryk Jankowski, a close friend of Solidarity founder Lech Walesa, said Friday he is to be charged with making antigovernment remarks. Official sources said another outspoken priest in Warsaw, Father Jerzy Popieluszko, was under investigation for similar reasons.

Meanwhile, it was still uncertain whether Walesa would collect his Nobel Prize in person. A spokesman for Walesa said late Thursday that Walesa had been misunderstood when he appeared to suggest in an interview on Norwegian television that he would travel to Oslo.
