Evans on Senate ballot; Alabama black reelected

Sen. Dan Evans, the former governor of Washington, won the Republican nomination for the Senate seat to which he was appointed after the death of Democratic Sen. Henry Jackson. Rep. Mike Lowry, an avowed liberal, scored a decisive victory in the Democratic primary for the seat.

In Birmingham, Ala., unexpectedly heavy voter turnout propelled Richard Arrington Jr., the city's first black mayor, to a second term.
