Monthly Record Guide: Pop-Rock (3)

Pop-Rock Lynne Jackson & Mike Palter: ''Rememberings.'' (Redlyn Ltd. JP-1A) - The title says it all. This is the real thing for people who like their music soft; nostalgic; and, above all, romantic. While there's one number from the '80s, the rest of the program ranges through earlier decades, beginning in 1921 with ''Ain't We Got Fun.'' Though the musicians are younger than most of their material, their love for the great standards and show tunes is clear from the first note of ''Sing a Rainbow'' to the last chord of ''Over the Rainbow,'' which colorfully open and close the disc. Outside influences creep in here and there: It's hard to miss the touches of Nina Simone, for example, in Jackson's winsome singing - but the style is very much the musicians' own, even when the tunes are as familiar as ''It Had To Be You'' or ''They Can't Take That Away From Me,'' not to mention the delicious overlapping of ''I Left My Heart in San Francisco'' and ''I'll Be Seeing You.'' In his notes to the disc, Palter wonders why music that requires a brain is called ''easy listening.'' It's a good question, posed by the spokesman for a duo that's as thoughtful as it is tuneful.
