Turkish military publishes list of approved candidates

Turkey's military rulers Tuesday completed their screening of parties and people allowed to run in next month's general elections, publishing the final list of approved parliamentary candidates.

The list showed that none of the three parties permitted to enter the poll had achieved a full list of 400 approved candidates and that only a few dozen independents were admitted out of hundreds of hopefuls. The small number of independents reflected the generals' stated desire to have parliament dominated by two or three strong parties and not prone to factional splits as was the assembly before the coup in September 1980.
