Court upholds conviction of ex-Tennessee governor

September 29, 1983

A federal appeals court Wednesday narrowly upheld the convictions of former Tennessee Gov. Ray Blanton and two aides in a political kickback scheme involving state liquor licenses. The 6-to-4 ruling by the Sixth US Circuit Court of Appeals reverses a previous one by a three-judge appellate panel that overturned the convictions because jurors might have been prejudiced by massive pretrial publicity.
