Reagan says timing of trip to Philippines is uncertain

September 28, 1983

President Reagan suggested in an interview published Tuesday that he may have to postpone a trip to the Philippines in early November if Congress was still in session then. Mr. Reagan's scheduled visit was timed to coincide with a congressional recess, but it now appears possible that Congress will still be in session at the start of November.

The President told the New York Post that the trip is still planned, but its timing is now questionable. There has been speculation that Mr. Reagan might cancel the visit in the wake of violence that followed the assassination of Philippine opposition leader Benigno Aquino.
