Soviets say they'll give US items from KAL jet

September 21, 1983

The Soviet Union told the United States Tuesday it will turn over ''objects and documents'' from the Korean airliner shot down over the Japan Sea, but did not say whether they included the plane's vital black box flight recorder.

The Soviet move came as the Pentagon disclosed that a US Navy salvage ship had picked up and then lost an electronic beep that searchers believe was emitted by the flight recorder. A Pentagon spokesman accused the Soviets of harassing the American search effort in international waters for flight wreckage.
