Anderson says party will enter presidential race

September 19, 1983

John Anderson says his new National Unity Party will hold a convention in late spring of 1984 to select a third-party candidate for president. In a television interview on Independent Network News, Anderson refused to say whether he himself would seek the nomination.

Anderson said he is working hard to organize the new party to ensure it will be represented on the ballot in a significant number of states. In the 1980 presidential election, Anderson, running as an independent, received 7 percent of the vote.
