Chilean politicians return from exile

September 6, 1983

A prominent Chilean Christian Democratic politician returned from exile Sunday, the third to do so in just over a week after President Augusto Pinochet Ugarte lifted a ban imposed on several hundred exiles. Renan Fuentealba, a former president of the Christian Democratic Party, was deported from Chile nine years ago.

About 3,000 people marched through Santiago Saturday to welcome back Andres Zaldivar, another former Christian Democratic leader, who pledged to fight for a return to democracy. Jaime Castillo, a former Christian Democratic justice minister, returned a week ago.
