Correction

In a story Aug. 29 on US Senate races next year, the Monitor mistakenly said the Republican Party had asked a governor from one state to run against a Democrat in another. The report should have read that the GOP was not able to urge Gov. Pierre S. (''Pete'') du Pont IV of Delaware to run against Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware. In Rhode Island, the GOP has also tried to convince Rep. Claudine Schneider to challenge Sen. Claiborne Pell. The Monitor regrets this error.
