Conservative chief elected to Canadian Parliament

New Canadian Conservative leader Brian Mulroney, who has never held political office in h s life, has won a seat in Parliament. The Montreal mining tycoon easily won a special election Monday in this Tory stronghold and now will lead the opposition in Parliament when the House of Commons reconvenes Sept. 12.

The Tories have a huge lead in opinion polls over Pierre Trudeau's ruling Liberals. A general election is widely expected next year. Mr. Trudeau has said he will not stand again.
