Liberian President visits Israel to discuss Libya

August 24, 1983

Liberian President Samuel Doe, who is the first black African leader to visit Israel in more than a decade, is seeking Israeli intelligence on Libya but no direct military help, Israeli officials said.

Mr. Doe received an immediate pledge of Israeli assistance against any intervention by Libya when he started a four-day state visit Monday. Israeli officials have denied press reports that Liberia sought direct military assistance, which it obtains from the US, but they said it wanted intelligence and information about Libya.
