Thousands fled inland as hurricane approached

Thousands of residents fled inland from their homes along the coast of Texas and Louisiana as hurricane Alicia gained strength and began lashing the coastline with gales and heavy rain squalls. The season's first hurricane was expected to hit the coast late Wednesday with winds of 100 miles per hour.
