Small crowd turns out for Pope in French town

August 15, 1983

A smaller-than-expected crowd came to see Pope John Paul II as he made a pilgrimage to the grotto of the Virgin Mary in Lourdes. The Pyrenean town is known among Catholics as a holy place where miraculous cures take place regularly. More than 3,000 uniformed police and many security agents patrolled Lourdes worried about violence after a church statue was blown up by an anti-clerical group on Friday.
