Soviets won't allow US to question Soviet youth

August 15, 1983

The Soviet Union still refuses to allow US officials to question the 16 -year-old son of an embassy member about whether he wants to defect, a Soviet diplomat said.

Andrei Berezhkov, the son of Valentin Berezhkov of the Soviet Embassy in Washington, ran away from home last week and sent a letter to the New York Times saying he wanted to stay in the US. He returned to his home in a Washington suburb, but State Department officials say they want him to remain in the US until they can question him. The Soviets call the letter a forgery.

The Soviet Embassy charged Saturday that FBI agents were harassing Soviet citizens at a Washington airport. The agents are watching to prevent Andrei from leaving the US.
