Soviet A-powered sub sank at sea in June

August 12, 1983

A nuclear-powered Soviet submarine carrying cruise missiles and a crew of about 90 sank in the Pacific in June, defense officials said. They also said they did not know the cause of the sinking, which occurred off the Soviet naval base of Petropavlovsk on the Kamchatka Pensinsula. It wasn't known if any crew members survived. Pentagon officials said Soviet salvage vessels raised the ship this week.
