US will not prosecute former EPA officials

The Justice Department announced it failed to find ''competent evidence'' warranting a criminal prosecution of former EPA chief Anne Burford for allegedly holding up a California toxic waste cleanup for political reasons.

The department also said it found insufficient evidence for criminal prosecution of five of Mrs. Burford's top aides for various allegations stemming from the controversy that led to their ouster from the Environmental Protection Agency.
