64 are arrested in Ulster riots

August 10, 1983

Police arrested 64 people, including two Americans, in Northern Ireland during violence Monday night. The riots marked the 12th anniversary Tuesday of Britain's introduction of internment - imprisonment without trial - for suspected guerrillas of the outlawed Irish Republican Army. The most serious disturbances were in Londonderry. Britain scrapped internment in 1975, but IRA supporters regularly mark the anniversary of its introduction.
